Indian benchmarks finished Wednesday, 4 November 2026 higher for a fifth session in a row, with a smaller point gain than Tuesday's surge. The Sensex closed up 383.55 points, or 0.50 percent, at 77,301.40. The Nifty 50 closed up 149.75 points, or 0.63 percent, at 23,960.60, near 24,000. Business Standard and India Today both printed those closes. Business Standard's headline rounded the Sensex move to 384 points.

It was the fifth consecutive winning session. Recent sessions had already been described as two-month highs: Reuters said that about Tuesday's close, in our explainer of the fourth session. Wednesday's notes at Zee Business, BusinessLine and CNBC-TV18 again put the benchmarks at two-month highs, and PTI called 77,301.40 the Sensex's highest close in more than two months.

A quick note: this is an explainer, not investment or financial advice. Monday's Reliance-led session is in the 2 November explainer.

The 60-second version

  • Sensex: Up 383.55 points (0.50 percent) to 77,301.40. Headlines rounded it to about 384 points.
  • Nifty 50: Up 149.75 points (0.63 percent) to 23,960.60. India Today said that close was the day's high.
  • Streak: Fifth straight up day (Business Standard, India Today). HDFC Sky: the longest winning streak in nearly five months. CNBC-TV18: the longest since June 2026.
  • Sectors: FMCG, realty, metals, media, consumer durables and financials supported the tape. Nifty IT was the sectoral loser, down over 1 percent (Business Standard) and 1.50 percent in India Today's sector print.
  • Broader market: Nifty MidCap 100 up 1.55 percent. Nifty SmallCap 100 up 2.0 percent (Business Standard). India Today matched those closes. Some other notes through the day differed slightly.
  • Nifty names: Bharat Electronics, Adani Enterprises, Titan Company (Business Standard).
  • Flows, previous day: FIIs net buyers of Rs 6,837 crore on 3 November. DIIs net sellers of Rs 3,679 crore. Sunny Agrawal, SBI Securities, in the Business Standard live blog.
  • Levels: Sudeep Shah, SBI Securities: support 23,850-23,870, hurdle 24,050-24,070, breakout path towards 24,230.

Where the indices closed

The closing print is the same at the two desks this explainer follows.

SourceSensexNifty 50
Business StandardUp 383.55 pts (0.50%) at 77,301.40Up 149.75 pts (0.63%) at 23,960.60
India TodayUp 383.55 pts (0.50%) at 77,301.40Up 149.75 pts (0.63%) at 23,960.60

Business Standard's headline said the Sensex gained 384 points and the Nifty closed at 23,961. The live-blog settlement line is the fuller print: 383.55 and 23,960.60. India Today's story uses those same settlement figures. Sunny Agrawal's note on that blog also rounded the day as 384 points (0.5 percent) and 150 points (0.6 percent), to 77,301 and 23,961. Use 383.55 / 77,301.40 and 149.75 / 23,960.60 for the close.

India Today described a volatile session. The Sensex opened at 76,853.11, fell to 76,604.85, and reached 77,396.04 before settling at 77,301.40. The Nifty opened at 23,742.25, fell to 23,696.15, and closed at its high, 23,960.60. India Today said the benchmarks briefly slipped into negative territory and recovered.

Broader market. Business Standard's closing line put the Nifty MidCap 100 up 1.55 percent and the Nifty SmallCap 100 up 2.0 percent. India Today's wrap printed the same pair: midcaps 1.55 percent, smallcaps 2 percent. A Moneycontrol closing note had smallcaps up about 2 percent and the midcap index up about 1.3 percent. The smallcap area is the same. The midcap print is the one that moves between desks, so the Business Standard and India Today closing pair is the figure used here.

Why this was the fifth straight gain

Tuesday, 3 November, was the fourth up day: Sensex 76,917.85, Nifty 23,810.85. Wednesday added another close above those levels and made it five.

The streak description depends on the desk:

  • Business Standard and India Today state the fact of the streak: a fifth consecutive higher session. They do not, in the copies used here, date the previous streak of this length.
  • HDFC Sky's close note said both benchmarks posted their longest winning streak in nearly five months.
  • CNBC-TV18 called the five higher closes the longest winning streak since June 2026.

Those are framings of the same five-session run. They are not a claim that Wednesday's point gain matched Tuesday's. Tuesday was a move of more than 1,200 Sensex points. Wednesday was 383.55.

On the "two-month high" line, keep the dates separate. Reuters used it for Tuesday's close. Zee Business, BusinessLine and CNBC-TV18 used two-month highs again for Wednesday. PTI said the Sensex close at 77,301.40 was the highest in more than two months.

Sectors and the names that moved

Business Standard's close said the benchmarks rose with sharp gains in FMCG, realty and metal shares. In the same piece, Nifty Media, Nifty Metal, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Realty outperformed, and Nifty IT "declined over 1 percent" to become the worst sectoral performer.

India Today's sector table is more specific, and it is the source for the consumer-durables and financials leg of the day:

Sector indexIndia Today move
Nifty MediaUp 5.15 percent
Nifty RealtyUp 2.85 percent
Nifty MetalUp 2.80 percent
Nifty Consumer DurablesUp 2.04 percent
Nifty FMCGUp 1.50 percent
Nifty AutoUp 1.16 percent
Nifty Financial Services 25/50Up 1.08 percent
Nifty ITDown 1.50 percent

India Today's intro also said the recovery was supported by buying in banking, auto, metal and media. Its sector list added that Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Pharma and Nifty Private Bank ended higher. Nifty IT, down 1.50 percent, is the figure behind Business Standard's "over 1 percent." India Today named TCS, HCL Technologies and Infosys among the IT stocks that fell. On the Sensex, it had TCS down 2.70 percent, HCL Technologies 2.23 percent and Infosys 1.65 percent.

Names on the way up. Business Standard said Bharat Electronics, Adani Enterprises and Titan Company were the top gainers on the Nifty 50. India Today, on the Sensex, put Bharat Electronics up 4.56 percent and Titan up 4.28 percent. It did not print a percentage for Adani Enterprises in that Sensex list. Other Sensex gainers in the India Today wrap included InterGlobe Aviation (2.39 percent), Bajaj Finance (2.38 percent), ITC (2.32 percent) and Adani Ports (2.30 percent).

Flows and the technical map

These are published views from the Business Standard live blog on 4 November. They are not recommendations.

Sunny Agrawal, head of fundamental research at SBI Securities, said direction from here hinges on quarterly earnings, crude oil trends, developments in the Middle East, US bond yields and FII flows. In that note, FIIs were net buyers of Rs 6,837 crore on 3 November, and DIIs were net sellers of Rs 3,679 crore. Read the date. It is Tuesday's flow, the session before this close, not a provisional figure for Wednesday.

Sudeep Shah, head of technical and derivatives research at SBI Securities, set the Nifty map after the close:

ZoneLevel
Immediate support23,850-23,870
If that support breaksShort-term profit booking towards 23,700, on his view
Upside hurdle24,050-24,070
If that hurdle breaks and holdsTowards 24,230

Wednesday's close at 23,960.60 sits between that support band and that hurdle, under 24,000 and under 24,050.

What to watch next

  1. Whether the Nifty clears 24,050-24,070 or stays capped under 24,000 after a close at 23,960.60. Shah's published path beyond a sustained breakout is towards 24,230.
  2. The 23,850-23,870 support band. Shah said a break there could mean short-term profit booking towards 23,700. That is his level, not a forecast that the index will get there.
  3. The next FII print, after the Rs 6,837 crore of net FII buying and Rs 3,679 crore of net DII selling that Agrawal cited for 3 November. Wednesday's own provisional flows were not the number in that note.
  4. The list Agrawal actually named: quarterly earnings, crude, the Middle East, US yields, and whether foreign buying continues.
  5. Whether IT stays the drag. India Today had Nifty IT down 1.50 percent while midcaps (1.55 percent) and smallcaps (2 percent) outperformed the Nifty's 0.63 percent.

Five up sessions have taken the Nifty to 23,960.60 and the Sensex to 77,301.40. The close is agreed. The open question is whether 24,050 gives way, and whether foreign buying from Tuesday shows up again.
