The Sensex had its strongest session in weeks on Monday, 2 November 2026, and almost all of the story was one stock. Reliance Industries jumped after Q2 results announced on Friday evening, and the benchmark closed back above 75,000 for the first time in nearly two months.

The point gain is agreed. The percentage in the headlines is not. The Times of India printed the Sensex move as 1,233 points, or 1.3 percent, to 75,693. The Indian Express printed the same session as 1,233.25 points, or 1.7 percent, to 75,692.78. Moneycontrol matched that close: 1,233.25 points, or 1.66 percent, at 75,692.78.

A quick note: this is an explainer, not investment or financial advice.

The 60-second version

  • Sensex: Up 1,233 points to about 75,693. The Times of India called the gain 1.3 percent and a near two-month closing high, the first close above 75,000 in nearly two months. The Indian Express called it 1.7 percent and the highest close since 7 September.
  • Nifty 50: Up about 388 points (1.68 to 1.7 percent) to 23,440.80-23,441. The Indian Express said that was a five-week high.
  • Reliance: Nearly 12 percent higher. The Times of India put the gain at 11.6 percent, the biggest single-session jump since 7 April 2020.
  • Index maths: Reliance added about 750 Sensex points (Moneycontrol: 762), more than half the day's Sensex rise, and about 198 Nifty points.
  • Wealth: About Rs 1.8 lakh crore added to Reliance's market value in one session. The whole BSE session added about Rs 8 lakh crore. BSE listed market cap was about Rs 482.3 lakh crore.
  • Breadth and flows: 23 of 30 Sensex stocks closed higher. FPIs bought a net Rs 3,115 crore on the NSE. DIIs sold a net Rs 392 crore.
  • Next session: Third straight up day into the close. Moneycontrol's 3 November map has Nifty resistance near 23,500, then 23,600 and 23,800-23,900, with support at 22,300-22,200.

Where the indices actually closed

Desks rounded the same Monday close differently. The points line up. The percentage The Times of India printed for the Sensex does not match the percentage The Indian Express and Moneycontrol printed.

SourceSensexNifty 50
The Times of IndiaUp 1,233 points, or 1.3%, at 75,693Up 388 points, or 1.7%, at 23,441
The Indian ExpressUp 1,233.25 points, or 1.7%, at 75,692.78Up 1.7% at 23,440.80
MoneycontrolUp 1,233.25 points, or 1.66%, at 75,692.78Up 387.70 points, or 1.68%, at 23,440.80

The Indian Express said 75,692.78 was the Sensex's highest close since 7 September, a nearly three-month high. The Times of India described a near two-month closing high and the first finish above the 75,000 mark in nearly two months. Both descriptions are of this same close. The Nifty, in The Indian Express, was at its highest in five weeks.

Moneycontrol's trade setup for the next session said the Nifty's 1.68 percent rise on 2 November was the third consecutive up session.

Why Reliance did the heavy lifting

Reliance reported its September-quarter numbers on Friday evening. Moneycontrol said it was the company's strongest quarter on revenue, EBITDA and net profit: consolidated revenue up 28 percent to Rs 3.62 lakh crore, EBITDA up 24 percent to a record Rs 62,409 crore, and net profit up 34 percent to Rs 29,550 crore, led by oil-to-chemicals, digital services and retail.

On Monday the stock did what a heavy index weight does when it moves this far.

  • The Times of India: Reliance ended nearly 12 percent up. The 11.6 percent rise was the biggest one-day jump since 7 April 2020, when, at the start of the Covid pandemic, the company said it was selling a 9.9 percent stake in Jio Platforms to Meta. The stock alone added about 750 Sensex points, more than half the day's gain, and about Rs 1.8 lakh crore to shareholder wealth.
  • Moneycontrol: The close was Rs 1,299, up 11.6 percent. Of the Sensex's 1,233 points, Reliance contributed 762. Of the Nifty's gain of about 388 points, it contributed 198.

The market-cap claim, and the HDFC exception

The Times of India, citing ETintelligence, said the day's Rs 1.8 lakh crore rise in Reliance's market value was the biggest single-session market-cap gain for a company ever.

The same report added the caveat that matters. In July 2023, HDFC Bank's market cap jumped by over Rs 3 lakh crore in a single session. That was the session after HDFC Bank merged its parent, HDFC, into itself, and the merged stock started trading. It was a larger absolute jump, and it was a merger listing day, which is why ETintelligence's "ever" line and the HDFC session can both sit in the same paragraph.

What else was behind the rally

Other stocks rose with it, even though one name supplied most of the index points.

  • Breadth: 23 of the 30 Sensex stocks closed higher, The Times of India said. The Indian Express said about 65 percent of NSE-traded stocks finished in the green, with metals, oil and gas, consumer durables and automobiles among the strongest sector gauges. The Indian Express also noted that Reliance's weight is high on both benchmarks (nearly 8 percent of the Nifty, third after HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank), so a move of this size pulls the index even when the rest of the tape is merely firm.
  • Foreign and domestic flows: NSE data cited by The Times of India showed foreign portfolio investors as net buyers of Rs 3,115 crore, and domestic institutional investors as net sellers of Rs 392 crore.
  • Listed wealth: The session added about Rs 8 lakh crore. The market capitalisation of all BSE-listed companies stood at about Rs 482.3 lakh crore.
  • Domestic macros: Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, told The Times of India that markets opened firm on Q2 results that beat estimates, plus improving domestic cues. He cited October passenger-vehicle sales as a read on festive demand, and higher gross GST collections as a read on consumption.
  • Crude and geopolitics: Nair also cited softer crude and renewed US-Iran diplomatic efforts. The Times of India, in its note on the US session, said oil prices tumbled more than 7 percent on hopes of a US-Iran deal, with Wall Street higher and investors also looking ahead to Tuesday's US midterm elections.
  • The tax headline, in one line: Reuters reported on 2 November that SEBI has recommended abolishing long-term capital gains tax for foreign investors. That is a pre-budget proposal, not a change in the tax. The detail is in SEBI's LTCG proposal for foreign investors, Explained.

The map for 3 November

Moneycontrol's trade setup, published after the close, treated Monday as the third straight winning session and put these Nifty zones in front of Tuesday's open:

ZoneLevel
Immediate resistanceAbout 23,500
If 23,500 breaks23,600, then 23,800-23,900
Support22,300-22,200

The same note said momentum gauges had strengthened, including an RSI near 61 and a MACD still above its signal line. Weekly options data in that piece put the heaviest call open interest at the 23,500 strike, which is the same neighbourhood as the resistance level above. The heaviest put open interest was at 23,000.

A support band as far down as 22,300-22,200 is a wide one after a close at 23,441. It is the level Moneycontrol's experts flagged as the immediate downside zone, not a forecast that the index will travel there in a day.

What to watch next

  1. Whether the Nifty holds the 23,400s and tests 23,500, the first resistance in the Moneycontrol setup, with 23,600 and then 23,800-23,900 beyond it.
  2. Whether Reliance holds the 11.6 percent jump. A one-day move of that size, the largest since April 2020, supplied more than half of the 1,233-point Sensex gain. The next session shows how much of it stays bid.
  3. Foreign flows on 3 November, after Monday's net FPI buying of Rs 3,115 crore on the NSE and net DII selling of Rs 392 crore.
  4. Crude and the US-Iran headlines. The Times of India tied a drop of more than 7 percent in oil to those hopes, and Vinod Nair cited softer crude as one reason energy-cost worries eased.
  5. The US midterm elections on Tuesday, which The Times of India said Wall Street was bracing for, alongside the oil move.

Monday put the Sensex back above 75,000 and handed Reliance its best day since the 2020 Jio-Meta announcement. The 1,233-point gain is the number the reports share. The question for Tuesday's open is whether 23,500 gives way.
