Indian benchmarks finished Tuesday, 3 November 2026 with another large gain, and this time the story was broader than one stock. The Sensex closed up 1,225.07 points, or 1.62 percent, at 76,917.85. The Nifty 50 closed up 370.05 points, or 1.58 percent, at 23,810.85. Moneycontrol, Business Standard and Reuters all printed those closes.

It was the fourth consecutive winning session. Reuters said both indexes have gained about 5 percent over four sessions and closed at two-month highs. Monday's jump had been driven mainly by Reliance Industries. Tuesday's tape was led by FMCG, realty and private banks, with soft crude and foreign buying in the mix.

A quick note: this is an explainer, not investment or financial advice. For Monday's Reliance-led session, see Sensex Rally on 2 November 2026, Explained.

The 60-second version

  • Sensex: Up 1,225.07 points (1.62 percent) to 76,917.85 (Moneycontrol, Business Standard, Reuters).
  • Nifty 50: Up 370.05 points (1.58 percent) to 23,810.85, above the 23,800 mark.
  • Streak: Fourth straight up day. About 5 percent over four sessions, two-month highs (Reuters).
  • Drivers: Easing crude after Monday's roughly 7 percent drop, Q2 earnings, renewed FII buying, and (in Geojit's note) softer US yields.
  • Leaders: Nifty FMCG, Realty, Private Bank and Auto. Capital market stocks also strong. PSU banks and energy lagged.
  • Names: Top Nifty gainers included BSE, Tata Consumer, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel, Nestle. Losers included Infosys, SBI, ONGC, Power Grid, Adani Enterprises (Moneycontrol). HDFC Bank +3.6 percent, ICICI Bank +2.7 percent, Marico about +10 percent (Reuters).
  • Rupee: Moneycontrol said the rupee closed 16 paise higher at 94.74 per dollar (previous close 94.90). An earlier Moneycontrol note had it up 12 paise to 94.72 during the day.
  • Asia contrast: Reuters said Asian tech was soft ahead of US midterm voting, while Indian shares were treated as a hedge against the global AI trade.

Business Standard put Nifty MidCap 100 up 1.06 percent and Nifty SmallCap 100 up 0.31 percent. Moneycontrol's closing bell had midcaps up about 0.8 percent (one later wrap said 0.6 percent) and smallcaps up 0.3 percent. Broader markets participated, but lagged the benchmarks.

Why Tuesday looked different from Monday

Monday, 2 November, was a Reliance day. The stock jumped about 11.6 percent after Friday's Q2 results and supplied more than half of that session's Sensex gain. Tuesday still benefited from that momentum, and V. K. Vijayakumar of Geojit, quoted by Moneycontrol, called an 11.6 percent one-day mega-cap surge rare, while arguing that softer Brent, weaker AI trade, good Q2 results and FIIs turning buyers could extend the rally.

The leadership on Tuesday was not one name:

  • Sectors: Moneycontrol's closing bell had Nifty FMCG up about 2.5 percent (an earlier timestamp showed 3.18 percent), Realty 2.10 percent, Private Bank 1.98 percent, Auto about 1.7 percent. Nifty PSU Bank fell about 1.4 percent (other notes said about 0.9 to 1.36 percent during the afternoon), and Energy was soft. Reuters said 13 of 16 major sectors advanced, with financials and private banks up about 1.8 percent and 2 percent.
  • Heavyweights: Reuters said HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, nearly 20 percent of the Nifty together, rose 3.6 percent and 2.7 percent. HSBC analysts led by Abhishek Murarka, cited by Reuters, raised their FY2027 Indian bank loan-growth forecast to 18 percent from 14 percent, saying private-lender valuations looked more compelling.
  • Stock picks: Moneycontrol named BSE Limited, Tata Consumer, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel and Nestle as top Nifty gainers. Marico jumped about 10 percent after beating quarterly profit estimates, Reuters said. Moneycontrol also flagged capital-market names and Angel One in afternoon notes.

Crude, FIIs and the rupee

Crude. Brent had fallen sharply on Monday (desks said more than 7 percent, with a settlement near $104.77 in related reporting). On Tuesday, Moneycontrol said Brent traded flat around $105 a barrel. Reuters put Brent about 1 percent higher near $106, as investors weighed Qatar-mediated talks and reports of a US strike on Iran's Qeshm Island. The directional cue for Indian equities was still the prior session's oil relief, not a fresh collapse on Tuesday.

Hariselvan Radhakrishnan of HST Wealth, quoted by Moneycontrol, said investor sentiment found support in that crude correction and in hopes of progress toward ending the conflict and restoring energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

Foreign flows. Reuters said foreign portfolio investors were net buyers in four of the past five sessions, aided by expectations of a long-term capital gains tax cut and steady earnings. Monday's NSE print, cited in our 2 November explainer, had FPIs as net buyers of about Rs 3,115 crore. SEBI's pre-budget LTCG proposal for foreign investors is covered separately and is not a tax change yet.

Rupee. Moneycontrol's closing currency note put the rupee 16 paise higher at 94.74 per dollar (previous close 94.90). An earlier intraday note had 94.72, up 12 paise. Soft oil and equity inflows were the reasons desks gave.

Technical map after the close

These are published technical views, not recommendations.

  • Ajit Mishra, Religare Broking (Moneycontrol / Business Standard): Nifty may meet resistance in the 23,800-23,900 zone. Support on a pullback: 23,200-23,500.
  • Shrikant Chouhan, Kotak Neo (Moneycontrol): Support near 23,650 / 76,500 and 23,600 / 76,300. Upside map toward 23,950-24,000 / 77,500-77,800. Below 23,600 / 76,300, the uptrend looks vulnerable on that view.
  • Sudeep Shah, SBI Securities (Moneycontrol): Nifty closed above its 100-day EMA for the first time since August 2026, and above the 61.8 percent Fibonacci retracement of the prior corrective phase. Near support 23,650-23,680. Short-term upside zone 23,930-23,950 if that support holds.
  • Ponmudi R, Enrich Money (Moneycontrol, earlier): Gap-up near 23,582, reclaim of the 100-day EMA, upside toward 23,800-24,000, support 23,500-23,450 then 23,200.

Monday's Moneycontrol setup had put 23,800-23,900 as the stretch zone after 23,500 and 23,600. Tuesday's close parked the Nifty inside that stretch zone on day four of the rally.

What to watch next

  1. Whether Nifty holds above 23,800 or slips back into the 23,650-23,500 support band desks are watching.
  2. US midterm election results, which roll into Wednesday morning IST. Reuters and several brokers flagged them as a near-term trigger alongside crude and FII flows.
  3. Crude and Hormuz headlines. Monday's oil drop powered the relief. Tuesday's rebound toward $105-$106 shows the geopolitical risk is not gone.
  4. FII follow-through after net buying in four of the past five sessions (Reuters), and any clarity on the SEBI LTCG proposal for foreign investors.
  5. Earnings leftovers, including whether consumption and private-bank strength hold after Tuesday's sector leadership.

Tuesday put the Nifty back above 23,800 and extended a four-day climb of about 5 percent. The close is agreed. The open question is whether oil stays soft and foreign money stays bid once the US vote is counted.
