Chennai Super Kings are exploring a trade for Liam Livingstone from Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2027, Cricbuzz reported. Vijay Tagore's account says SRH are believed to be undecided, that interest from another northern franchise is only at the discussion stage, and that nothing has been finalised. News18 and CricTracker both relayed that reporting on 3 November 2026. Neither franchise has confirmed a deal.

The 60-second version

  • Story: Cricbuzz (Vijay Tagore) reported that CSK are exploring taking Livingstone, 33, from SRH. SRH are believed to be undecided. Another northern franchise's interest is only a discussion.
  • Status: Sources told Cricbuzz the sides are discussing Livingstone and another CSK player, that several players and franchises are involved, and that nothing has been finalised. "It may or may not go through." Not franchise-confirmed. Officials were not available for comment.
  • Fees: SRH bought him for Rs 13 crore at the last auction after Royal Challengers Bengaluru released him. RCB had bought him for Rs 8.75 crore in the previous mega auction.
  • Last season: 15 runs in two games for SRH, then he lost his place in the playing XI, including as an Impact Player.
  • Khaleel angle: Some sources say CSK are open to giving Khaleel Ahmed. Cricbuzz said that detail may not be entirely credible, because SRH recently acquired T Natarajan, another veteran left-arm pacer like Khaleel.
  • Deadline: The BCCI extended the retention deadline to 17 November 2026 from 15 November, per Cricbuzz. The mini-auction remains 16 December 2026 in Goa.

What Cricbuzz reported

Tagore reported that Chennai are exploring taking Livingstone from Sunrisers in a trade. In that account, SRH are believed to be undecided. Interest from another northern franchise is only at the discussion stage. The report does not name that franchise.

Cricbuzz quoted sources as saying: "The franchises are certainly discussing Livingstone and another player apart from Khaleel in CSK. Multiple players and multiple franchises are involved in the trade discussions, not just two, and nothing has been finalised." The sources added: "It may or may not go through."

At the time of that reporting, franchise officials were not available for comment.

News18 (Rudransh Khurana, updated 3 November 2026, 17:13 IST) and CricTracker (3 November 2026, 17:00 IST) both relayed the Cricbuzz reporting: CSK talks with SRH, Khaleel possibly moving the other way, more than one franchise in the discussions, nothing finalised, and the 17 November deadline.

Until CSK, SRH or the IPL put out a statement, this stays attributed trade talk.

Why Livingstone is in the frame

Livingstone is 33. Sunrisers bought him for Rs 13 crore at the last auction after Royal Challengers Bengaluru released him. In the previous mega auction, RCB had bought him for Rs 8.75 crore.

Last season for SRH he scored 15 runs in two games, then lost his spot in the playing XI, including as an Impact Player.

News18's career note, which takes in the SRH stint, puts him at 1,066 runs in 49 IPL innings at a strike rate of 155.16, across Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and now Sunrisers. The most productive season in that note is 437 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 182.08. News18 describes him as a middle-order batter who bowls off-spin and leg-spin, and notes a tendency to struggle against spin. News18 says that tendency could matter at Chepauk if the pitches turn.

What a Khaleel Ahmed swap would mean

Some sources say CSK are open to giving Khaleel Ahmed in the other direction. If that version were the deal, Chennai would be sending a left-arm pacer to Hyderabad for a middle-order batter who also bowls off-spin and leg-spin.

News18's note on Khaleel: he began his IPL career at SRH in 2018, and his best season came a year later, with 19 wickets. The same report says SRH already have T Natarajan and Jaydev Unadkat as senior left-arm pacers. A Khaleel arrival would add a third name to that group.

Why that swap is uncertain

Cricbuzz said the Khaleel information may not be entirely credible. The reason it gave is the one News18 also records: SRH recently acquired T Natarajan, another veteran left-arm pacer, like Khaleel.

The sources Cricbuzz quoted went further. They said the franchises are discussing Livingstone and another player apart from Khaleel in the CSK squad. They also said the talks are not a two-club conversation: "Multiple players and multiple franchises are involved in the trade discussions, not just two, and nothing has been finalised."

The reporting has three strands, and they are not the same claim. CSK are exploring Livingstone. A northern franchise has an interest that is still only a discussion. Khaleel appears in some accounts, while Cricbuzz's sources spoke of another CSK player apart from him. None of this is a completed trade.

How this fits the IPL 2027 calendar

Cricbuzz reported that the BCCI extended the retention deadline from 15 November 2026 to 17 November 2026. The mini-auction remains 16 December 2026 in Goa.

Any Livingstone deal that the franchises do complete would have to be on the books against that retention date. The line from Cricbuzz's sources still stands in front of it: the talks may or may not go through.

What to watch next

  1. A statement from Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad or the IPL. Officials were not available for comment in the Cricbuzz report.
  2. The other CSK player. Sources told Cricbuzz the discussion is Livingstone plus a player apart from Khaleel. A name, if one is confirmed, is the next fact.
  3. Whether Khaleel is in or out. Some sources have CSK open to sending him. Cricbuzz flagged that version as possibly not entirely credible because SRH already added T Natarajan.
  4. The northern franchise, if that discussion moves past the stage Cricbuzz described. The report does not name the club.
  5. Retention lists around 17 November 2026, which will show where Livingstone is held, and the 16 December mini-auction in Goa if he is released instead.

Livingstone to CSK is a live conversation in the Cricbuzz reporting, relayed the same afternoon by News18 and CricTracker. Sources said it may or may not go through. Until a franchise or the IPL confirms it, that is the story.

This explainer is based on Cricbuzz reporting by Vijay Tagore, relayed by News18 (Rudransh Khurana, updated 3 November 2026, 17:13 IST) and CricTracker (3 November 2026, 17:00 IST). Career notes on Livingstone and Khaleel Ahmed are News18's. The retention deadline of 17 November 2026, extended from 15 November, and the 16 December 2026 mini-auction in Goa, are from Cricbuzz. Franchise officials were not available for comment in the Cricbuzz report. Neither Chennai Super Kings nor Sunrisers Hyderabad had confirmed a trade at the time of writing.
