Google Dreambeans in India: Stories, Languages and Privacy, Explained
Google is expanding Dreambeans, an experimental Google Labs app that creates personalised daily story collections, to people in India aged 18 and above, the company's India blog said on 3 November 2026. Stories are brewed from Google apps the user selects, on Android and iOS, across 14 languages. Here is how it works, what privacy controls Google describes, and how to read the US download estimates.
Dreambeans, an experimental Google Labs app that creates personalised daily story collections, is expanding to people in India aged 18 and above, Google's India blog said on 3 November 2026. TechCrunch (Jagmeet Singh, 7:30 pm PST on 2 November 2026) called India the first market outside the US. The app is on Android and iOS. It builds illustrated stories from Google apps the user chooses to connect. Here is what those reports say it does, which languages it supports, what privacy controls Google describes, and how to read the US download estimates.
The 60-second version
- What it is: An experimental Google Labs app for personalised daily story collections, now open to people in India who are 18 or older (Google India blog, 3 November 2026).
- First stop outside the US: TechCrunch described India as Dreambeans' first market outside the United States.
- Inputs: Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search and YouTube, only for the apps the user selects (Google India blog).
- Output: Illustrated stories without a typed prompt. TechCrunch said Google recently added its Veo video model to animate images in select stories. The Hindu described the pictures as water-colour style.
- Languages: 14, including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Assamese and Nepali (Google India blog). TechCrunch and Mint include English. Users pick one language at a time (Gozde Oznur, via TechCrunch).
- Privacy: Connect or disconnect services, delete Dreambeans data, personal Gmail only, stories visible only to the account holder (TechCrunch). Opt-ins do not change Gemini or AI Mode choices (The Hindu).
- Limits: The app can hallucinate (The Hindu). It cannot mix languages in one story (Oznur). US downloads are Sensor Tower estimates, and they fell sharply in October.
What Google is shipping in India
Google's India blog says Dreambeans is meant to connect people with what matters without the endless scroll. The examples it gives include places to explore, arts and crafts, and reminders of upcoming local events. A reader can open a story for more detail, bookmark it, or share it.
TechCrunch said Google picked India as the first international market because of strong interest from people in India who wanted access, and because of widespread use of Google services. Product manager Gozde Oznur said India stood out for a high overlap of users across Gemini, Gmail and Google Photos.
The timeline in the US is told slightly differently by outlet, so both versions belong here. TechCrunch said the app was introduced in June, and that the India launch comes less than two months after Google made it available to all eligible US users aged 18 and older. Mint (Pragya Singha Roy, 3 November 2026) likewise said Dreambeans was introduced in the US in June 2026 and opened to all eligible users aged 18 and above in September. The Hindu (John Xavier, updated 3 November 2026 at 10:23 am IST) said this standalone app was first rolled out to Android and iOS users in the US in September.
How a Dreambeans story gets made
The Google India blog says Dreambeans "brews" stories from information in the Google apps the user selects: Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search and YouTube. Feedback is supposed to make later stories better.
TechCrunch said the generation is proactive. The user does not enter a prompt. The early version used static, AI-generated illustrations. Google has since added a feature that uses its Veo video-generation model to animate images in select stories. Mint reported the same Veo addition for certain stories.
The Hindu said the app creates water-colour style images each day by connecting Google applications such as Photos, email and Calendar that are linked to the user. It also reported Google's statement that the app processes data only from apps the user has opted into. If an app is not linked, information from that app is not included.
The Hindu described the interface as closer to a visual journal that is private to the user than to a social network where people connect with one another.
Languages, with one limit
Google's India blog says Dreambeans is available on Android and iOS across 14 languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Assamese and Nepali. That list is 13 names. TechCrunch said India support covers 13 local languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, alongside English. Mint also counted English inside the set of 14, along with Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Punjabi and Urdu.
The limit is sharper than the language list. Oznur told TechCrunch that users can select only one language at a time for generated stories. The app can draw on information sitting in Google services in more than one language, but it cannot currently generate stories that mix languages. TechCrunch noted that this could limit appeal in India, where many people switch between languages, including Hindi and English, a mix often called Hinglish.
Privacy controls Google describes
TechCrunch reported that Dreambeans uses Google's Personal Intelligence technology to draw on connected services. Those services can hold sensitive personal information.
Oznur, as reported by TechCrunch, described these controls:
- Users choose which Google services to connect, and can disconnect them at any time.
- Users can delete Dreambeans data from inside the app.
- Information deleted from the underlying connected services is also removed from Dreambeans' personalisation system. TechCrunch presented that as Oznur's assertion.
- Users can tell the app to avoid certain subjects, including business-related information, and the app will try to adjust.
- Dreambeans is available only to personal Gmail account holders, not enterprise users.
- Generated stories are visible only to the account holder.
The Hindu reported two further points from the company. Users can change which apps are connected, and they can delete their data by tapping the profile icon. Opt-ins made in Dreambeans do not affect choices made in Gemini or AI Mode.
Hallucinations, upsetting memories, and the US numbers
The Hindu reported that Google has said the app can hallucinate and, at times, create stories that are incorrect. In that case the company recommends a thumbs-down tap so the app can be fine-tuned.
TechCrunch reported a separate risk of the proactive design. Oznur acknowledged that Dreambeans could generate stories involving people who have died. She said users can tell the app to stop showing certain subjects, and compared that control to tools in Google Photos that limit which memories appear.
Oznur also told reporters that Google is exploring ways to make Dreambeans more actionable, moving past personalised stories and recommendations so users can act on suggestions. TechCrunch reported that as exploration under way.
The US download picture is an estimate, and TechCrunch framed it against very different products. Sensor Tower figures shared with TechCrunch:
- Nearly 55,000 US downloads since the June debut.
- About 63 percent of those downloads came in September, when Google opened the app to all eligible US users aged 18 and older.
- Downloads dropped 84 percent from the previous month to about 5,500 in October.
- In the first 30 days after the full US opening, an estimated 29,000 downloads. Sensor Tower's comparable first-30-day figures were 7.4 million for Meta's Muse, 2.8 million for ChatGPT, 362,000 for Grok Bot and 155,000 for Claude.
TechCrunch's own caveat belongs next to that comparison. Muse, ChatGPT, Grok Bot and Claude answer a broad range of queries. Dreambeans generates personalised stories. The October figure is a Sensor Tower estimate for the US app. These reports did not include an India install count. The India launch had only just been announced.
What to watch next
- India installs, once any store or Sensor Tower count exists. The US estimates above describe the American app.
- Mixed-language stories. Oznur said the app cannot mix languages in one story today. TechCrunch flagged Hinglish as the obvious gap.
- How the memory controls work when a story touches a death, a business topic, or anything else a user asks the app to drop.
- Veo animation: how often India stories actually move, and how often they stay as still images.
- Hallucination reports, and whether thumbs-down feedback changes the next day's collection in a way users can see.
- Actionable features Oznur said Google is exploring, if they ship beyond recommendations.
Dreambeans is now an India app for adults, on both major phone platforms, drawing only on the Google services a personal account chooses to connect. The open questions are language mixing, how often the stories are wrong or unwelcome, and whether the US download pattern Sensor Tower estimated says anything about demand here.
This explainer is based on Google's India blog post dated 3 November 2026; TechCrunch (Jagmeet Singh, 2 November 2026, 7:30 pm PST); The Hindu (John Xavier, updated 3 November 2026, 10:23 am IST); and Mint (Pragya Singha Roy, published 3 November 2026, 11:12 am IST). US download figures are Sensor Tower estimates reported by TechCrunch, not figures published by Google. Language limits, privacy controls and the actionable-features comment are attributed to Google product manager Gozde Oznur as reported by TechCrunch. The water-colour description, the hallucination warning, the thumbs-down control, and the point that Dreambeans opt-ins do not change Gemini or AI Mode choices are attributed to company statements as reported by The Hindu.
