How the 8-1 semi unfolded
Sportstar's match report gives the scorers and the minutes. Where two goals share a minute, that report leaves the order inside the minute unstated, and it gives no shot type. The table below follows those minutes only.
| Minute | Scorer | Team |
|---|---|---|
| 4th | Shilanand Lakra | India |
| 9th | Harmanpreet Singh (captain) | India |
| 9th | Han Sangjun | Korea |
| 13th | Shilanand Lakra | India |
| 21st | Dilpreet Singh | India |
| 21st | Sukhjeet Singh | India |
| 25th | Dilpreet Singh | India |
| 36th | Angad Singh | India |
| 54th | Vivek Prasad | India |
Lakra and Dilpreet scored twice each. Harmanpreet, Sukhjeet, Angad and Vivek scored once each. Korea's only goal was Han Sangjun's, also in the 9th minute, the same minute as Harmanpreet's goal.
PTI's report of the same 8-1 used fuller names for two of those scorers: Angad Bir Singh for the 36th minute and Vivek Sagar Prasad for the 54th. The league-stage report used Angad Bir Singh for the 60th-minute goal in the 8-0. The minutes in the PTI and Sportstar reports of the semifinal agree.
The venue was the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali, on Wednesday. Sportstar called India the defending champions and said the win extended an unbeaten run.
How Japan reached the final
Japan reached the final through a shootout. The Star and the New Straits Times, both on 4 November, reported a 0-0 draw with Malaysia, then a 5-3 win for Japan on penalties.
The Star's scorers:
- Japan: Kazumasa Matsumoto, Ryoma Ooka, Tanaka Tsubasa, Haruki Ochiai, Tanaka Seren.
- Malaysia: Nik Aiman Rozemi, Shello Silverius, Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal.
NST reported the same 5-3 result and said Japan converted all five attempts. It also reported that veteran striker Faizal Saari missed Malaysia's opening attempt, and that Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi, Shello Silverius and Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal scored the three Malaysia goals that followed. NST's name order puts the given name first (Tsubasa Tanaka, Seren Tanaka). The Star prints Tanaka Tsubasa and Tanaka Seren. NST placed the match at the Mohali Hockey Stadium.
Japan went into that semi as league runners-up. India had finished first.
Head-to-head and form
The final is a rematch of a pool game, not a first meeting.
- 30 October, pool: India beat Japan 4-1.
- League table: India 5 wins from 5, 15 points, first place. Japan finished second. The full table is in the 8-0 league explainer.
- 2 November, Jalandhar: India beat South Korea 8-0 in the last league match. That is a different score, a different day and a different ground from Wednesday's 8-1 semifinal in Mohali.
- 4 November: A sixth straight win in the competition (Sportstar). India have not lost in this tournament.
Sportstar's line on the title is specific. The 8-1 "moved a step closer to a record-extending sixth title." The final is still to be played. Japan are the opponent, after coming through a shootout.
