Tipra Motha's TTAADC Sweep: Why Tripura's Tribal Vote Deserted the BJP in 2026, Explained
Tipra Motha won 24 of 28 seats in Tripura's tribal council election in April 2026, reducing ally-turned-rival BJP to four, then swept the village committee polls in October. Here is what happened, why it matters, and what it means for Manik Saha's government.
In Tripura, the BJP and Tipra Motha share power in the state government. In the tribal heartland, they are bitter rivals, and in 2026, Tipra Motha won that rivalry decisively. The party swept the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) election in April, then dominated the council's village committee polls declared in October. Here is what happened and what it means.
The 60-second version
- TTAADC result (17 April 2026): Tipra Motha 24 of 28 seats, BJP 4 (down from 9).
- Vote share: Tipra Motha about 57.6 percent.
- Village committees (October 2026): Tipra Motha 3,428 of 4,594 declared seats, BJP 859.
- The paradox: The two parties are coalition partners in the state government, under CM Manik Saha.
- Next assembly election: Due in early 2028.
What is the TTAADC, and why does it matter?
The TTAADC is a Sixth Schedule autonomous council covering roughly two-thirds of Tripura's land area, where most of the state's indigenous Tiprasa communities live. It controls land, customary matters and local development in those areas, which makes it the most important political prize in Tripura after the state government itself. Whoever wins it has a strong claim to speak for Tripura's tribal voters.
How allies became rivals
Tipra Motha, led by former royal Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, burst onto the scene by winning the TTAADC in 2021 and then 13 seats in the 2023 assembly election, becoming the main opposition. In March 2024, it joined the BJP-led government and took ministerial posts.
But for the 2026 council election, the two parties contested separately, and the campaign turned ugly:
- CM Manik Saha accused Tipra Motha of inciting violence against BJP workers, including attacks on homes, and warned that troublemakers would not be spared.
- Saha accused the party of corruption in the TTAADC over its five-year term, alleging funds had not produced visible work.
- He criticised slogans such as "Thansa" (unity) and "Greater Tipraland" as misleading voters.
Tipra Motha rejected these charges and ran on tribal identity and autonomy.
The verdict
Voters sided overwhelmingly with Tipra Motha. It won 24 of 28 seats with about 57.6 percent of the vote, while the BJP fell from 9 to 4 seats. The village committee results in October confirmed the trend at the grassroots, with Tipra Motha winning nearly three of every four declared seats.
Before the village polls, Saha had said in August 2026 that an electoral understanding with Tipra Motha remained possible and that talks were underway. The results suggest Tipra Motha did not need one.
What it means
- Tipra Motha is the tribal force. Its dominance of tribal areas is now beyond doubt.
- Coalition tension. Sharing a government with a party you have just fought bitterly is awkward, and the alliance's future is an open question.
- The 2028 math. Tripura's 60-seat assembly includes 20 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes. If Tipra Motha holds this support, the BJP will struggle to win a majority alone.
- "Greater Tipraland." Tipra Motha's core demand for a separate constitutional arrangement for tribal areas will gain strength from these results.
