Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has passed his own 2.0 to become the highest-grossing Tamil film ever at the Indian box office, with about Rs 520 crore gross in 17 days, according to Sacnilk. It has also crossed Rs 200 crore in Tamil Nadu and about Rs 790 crore worldwide. Here are the numbers, the records and whether Rs 1,000 crore is realistic.
Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has done what no Tamil film had done before: it has overtaken 2.0 (2018) as the highest-grossing Tamil film at the Indian box office. The India margin is small, under Rs 1 crore, but Jailer 2 is still running in cinemas, so the gap will widen. On the worldwide list, reports say it passed 2.0 a week earlier.
Overseas: a new Tamil record
Jailer 2's overseas gross of about Rs 270.50 crore is the highest ever for a Tamil film, ahead of Jailer (2023) and 2.0. It has also passed KGF Chapter 2's overseas run (about Rs 214 crore) and is about Rs 50 lakh short of Pushpa 2: The Rule's overseas total of about Rs 271 crore, according to The Week. Overseas markets make up about 34% of its worldwide total.
Tamil Nadu: past Rs 200 crore
Jailer 2 has crossed Rs 200 crore gross in Tamil Nadu, the first Rajinikanth film to do so. His previous film, Jailer, earned about Rs 189 crore in the state. It still trails the state's top three, according to ETV Bharat:

How the run has gone so far
- First eight days: about Rs 334 crore net in India.
- Second week: about Rs 95.5 crore net.
- Third weekend: single-day net between about Rs 5.5 crore and Rs 9.7 crore, depending on the day and the estimate.
- Languages: the film is playing in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada. Tamil accounted for roughly three-quarters of the India net on day 17, per early Sacnilk estimates.
Can it reach Rs 1,000 crore?
Jailer 2 needs a little over Rs 200 crore more worldwide. Distributor Tiruppur Subramaniam has said it could become the first Tamil film to reach Rs 1,000 crore, pointing to a possible festive boost and a 50-day run. Against that, daily collections are slowing and new releases will take screens. Crossing Rs 800 crore looks close; Rs 1,000 crore would need an unusually long tail.
