N. Rangasamy's Fifth Term: How the NDA Retained Puducherry in 2026, Explained
The AINRC-led NDA won the 2026 Puducherry assembly election, and N. Rangasamy was sworn in as Chief Minister for a record fifth time. Here are the results, why the alliance won, and the issues his new government faces.
Few politicians in India have bounced back as often as N. Rangasamy. When the 2026 Puducherry results were declared on 4 May 2026, the soft-spoken leader of the All India NR Congress (AINRC) had done it again: his NDA alliance retained power, and he was sworn in as Chief Minister for a record fifth time. Here is what happened and what comes next.
The 60-second version
- Result day: 4 May 2026.
- Winner: The AINRC-led NDA (AINRC, BJP, AIADMK).
- Seat tally: AINRC about 12, BJP 4, AIADMK 1, giving the alliance a majority of the 30 elected seats. Reports put the NDA's total at 17 to 18.
- Opposition: The DMK-led bloc won 6 seats.
- CM: N. Rangasamy, sworn in for a fifth term in May 2026.
- Twist: Rangasamy won two seats and must vacate one.
How the vote went
Rangasamy's AINRC was the clear anchor of the alliance, winning roughly a dozen seats on its own. Early reports differed slightly, with some counting 11 AINRC seats and others 12. The BJP added 4 seats and the AIADMK 1, taking the NDA comfortably past the halfway mark.
The DMK-led opposition managed just 6 seats, a disappointing result for a bloc that had hoped anti-incumbency would work in its favour.
Rangasamy himself contested from two constituencies and won both:
- Thattanchavady: beat E. Vinayagam of the Neyam Makkal Kazhagam by 4,441 votes.
- Mangalam: beat the DMK's S.S. Rangan by 7,050 votes.
Why the NDA won
- Rangasamy's personal brand. He is widely seen in Puducherry as accessible and low-key, an image that has carried him through more than three decades of politics.
- A stable alliance. The AINRC, BJP and AIADMK went in together, avoiding the vote splits that hurt them in past contests.
- A divided opposition. The DMK-led bloc struggled to present a strong alternative or a clear Chief Ministerial face.
Who is N. Rangasamy?
Rangasamy began his career in the Congress and first became Chief Minister in 2001. After falling out with the party, he founded the AINRC in 2011 and won power that same year. He lost in 2016, returned in 2021 at the head of the NDA, and has now won again in 2026. No one else has been Chief Minister of Puducherry five times.
The issues ahead
- Statehood. Rangasamy has long pushed for full statehood for Puducherry, arguing that the elected government needs more control over finances and administration. Being part of the NDA puts him in a better position to press the Centre, but also limits how loudly he can push.
- Finances. As a Union Territory with a legislature, Puducherry depends on central grants, which constrain spending on welfare promises.
- Lieutenant Governor relations. Disputes between elected governments and the LG have defined Puducherry politics before; an NDA government at both ends may keep friction low.
- The by-election. Whichever seat Rangasamy vacates will go to a by-election, an early test of his new government.
Rangasamy's fifth term gives him a rare chance to leave a lasting mark on Puducherry. The statehood question will decide whether that legacy is about administration or about changing the territory's constitutional status.
