If you have tried to start an SIP in an international mutual fund in the past year, you have probably seen the words "temporarily suspended". In 2026, several fund houses have reopened their overseas schemes, but each with different rules. Here is where things stand in October 2026.

The 60-second version

  • HSBC: 3 funds open for SIP and lumpsum from 18 August, up to 2 lakh rupees per PAN per month
  • Aditya Birla Sun Life: 3 funds reopened from 24 September, up to 1 crore rupees per PAN per day
  • Invesco: new SIPs allowed (up to 10 lakh per PAN per day), lumpsum suspended from 29 September
  • PGIM India: lumpsum allowed from 8 October, new SIPs suspended
  • Nippon India and Axis: some overseas schemes closed to fresh money since April and May, as reported
  • Why: the industry's 7 billion dollar overseas investment limit

The details that trip people up

HSBC: a monthly cap

HSBC's limit of 2 lakh rupees per PAN per month covers all routes: lumpsum, switch-ins, new SIPs and STPs, and IDCW transfer plans. If you already run large SIPs in these funds, a new SIP may be rejected once you cross the cap. Our earlier HSBC international funds explainer has the background.

Aditya Birla Sun Life: a high daily cap

The 1 crore rupees per PAN per day limit counts fresh and existing subscriptions together, including lumpsum, switch-ins, SIPs and STPs. For most retail investors that is not a real constraint.

Invesco: SIP yes, lumpsum no

Invesco reopened its three overseas fund-of-funds in late September, then suspended lumpsum purchases and switch-ins from 29 September to avoid breaching its overseas limit. What still works:

  • New SIP, STP and IDCW transfer registrations, up to 10 lakh rupees per day per PAN (first holder). Transactions above that are rejected.
  • Existing SIP instalments, which count toward the daily limit.
  • Redemptions, switch-outs and SWPs as normal.

The Invesco EQQQ NASDAQ-100 ETF FoF is not part of this reopening and has been closed to fresh money since April 2024.

PGIM: lumpsum yes, new SIP no

PGIM India's Global Select Real Estate Securities Fund of Fund accepts fresh and additional lumpsum and switch-ins from 8 October 2026. Existing SIPs continue, but fresh SIP and STP registrations and existing STPs into the scheme stay suspended.

Why the doors keep opening and closing

LimitAmount
Whole mutual fund industry, overseas securities7 billion US dollars
Whole industry, overseas ETFs1 billion US dollars
Per fund house1 billion US dollars

Under SEBI's June 2022 approach, each AMC can invest abroad only up to its overseas exposure as of 1 February 2022. The gap between that level and what it holds now is its headroom. When investors redeem, headroom opens and the AMC can reopen. When new money fills it, the AMC suspends again. That is why the same fund can open and shut within weeks, as Invesco's did in September.

What this means for you

  • Starting an SIP? HSBC, Aditya Birla Sun Life and Invesco currently accept new SIP registrations, within their caps.
  • Investing a lumpsum? HSBC, Aditya Birla Sun Life and PGIM currently accept it. Invesco does not.
  • Already invested in a closed fund? Your money stays invested and you can redeem as usual.
  • Want steady overseas exposure? Because schemes can close without warning, some investors spread across more than one AMC. Think about currency risk and how much of your portfolio you want abroad before you invest.

The bottom line

International mutual funds are partly open in October 2026: HSBC and Aditya Birla Sun Life accept both SIP and lumpsum within limits, Invesco accepts only SIPs, and PGIM accepts only lumpsum. All of it depends on the industry's 7 billion dollar overseas cap, so check the latest AMC notice before you invest.

Frequently asked questions

›Which international mutual funds are open for SIP in October 2026?

Based on the latest AMC notices reported: HSBC's three international schemes accept SIPs and lumpsum up to 2 lakh rupees per PAN per month (from 18 August 2026); Aditya Birla Sun Life's three international schemes reopened from 24 September 2026 up to 1 crore rupees per PAN per day; and Invesco's three overseas fund-of-funds accept new SIP and STP registrations up to 10 lakh rupees per PAN per day. Status can change at short notice, so check the AMC's latest notice.

›Can I invest a lumpsum in Invesco's international funds?

Not at present. Invesco suspended lumpsum purchases and switch-ins in its Global Equity Income, Pan European Equity and Global Consumer Trends fund-of-funds from 29 September 2026. New SIP, STP and IDCW transfer registrations are still allowed up to 10 lakh rupees per PAN per day.

›Can I start a new SIP in PGIM's global real estate fund?

No. PGIM India reopened its Global Select Real Estate Securities Fund of Fund for lumpsum and switch-ins from 8 October 2026, and existing SIPs continue, but fresh SIP and STP registrations remain suspended.

›Why do international mutual funds keep closing?

Indian mutual funds as a whole can invest only up to 7 billion US dollars in overseas securities and 1 billion dollars in overseas ETFs, with a 1 billion dollar cap per fund house. Each AMC can invest only up to its overseas exposure as of 1 February 2022. When a fund house runs out of this headroom it stops fresh money; when redemptions free up room it reopens.

›Are my existing investments in a closed international fund safe?

A suspension only stops new money coming in. Existing units stay invested and keep tracking the underlying markets, and redemptions continue normally.
